Although I regard writing as both a therapeutic and a
pedagogical practice, I prefer reading to writing. Among the reasons that best
explain the relative scarcity of my writing, the most important is my enduring
conviction that I am still in the process of formation. I have the persistent
feeling that I have neither studied nor read enough to write with the level of
quality to which I aspire. Indeed, I sometimes think that, in this lifetime, I
will never reach the standard I would truly like to attain. For that reason, my
preference for reading over writing is not rooted primarily in pleasure.
Rather, it stems from the caution with which I approach whatever I choose to
place into the world. If it were possible, I would go back in time and be far
more rigorous about everything I have written, beginning with my own academic
work. Even in my reading habits, I remain consistently devoted to the great
classics. As a result, I seldom read contemporary authors unless they come
highly recommended by readers who themselves are deeply familiar with the
classical tradition. I have no idea how many books are published each day, but
I continue to read and reread the classics. I am still—and I suspect I always
will be—in formation.
