Thinking about Democritus in Meditation, by Salvator Rosa

I found myself thinking about Salvator Rosa's painting Democritus in Meditation. I was reminded of this remarkable work because of its ability to illustrate what I take to be the condition of a world afflicted by what is perhaps the gravest illness that could befall it. I am referring to one of those spiritual illnesses—I use the term here as synonymous with cultural, intellectual, or even moral illnesses—that most poignantly exposes our capacity to become profoundly insignificant: intellectual poverty.

At least for me, having been institutionally connected to the university without interruption since 1999, it is impossible to think about the disease of intellectual poverty without tracing one of its principal causes to the university itself. The university, which ought to be the foremost guardian of humanity's intellectual and spiritual cultivation, is undergoing a crisis whose resolution, I suspect, I shall not live to witness.

Both in society at large and—perhaps even more so—within the university, there seems to be an ongoing project aimed at undermining (i) creativity (or originality), (ii) rigor, (iii) clarity, (iv) boldness, (v) prudence, and (vi) depth (I borrow this list from Alfredo d'Annunzio). Although this assault is complex, it most commonly manifests itself as an attack on freedom of thought and expression, followed by the exclusion of heterodox intellectual movements.

As Christophe Clavé aptly observes, "Plus le langage est pauvre, moins la pensée existe"—"The poorer our language becomes, the less thought there is." Language is, above all, the guardian of thought.

What should we make of a world in which language is increasingly confined to fashionable expressions and to the extremely narrow horizons imposed by projects that are, in the end, political or ideological? Identity politics may well be one symptom of this disease. Another is the emergence of a profoundly restrictive language—a language that is limited, limiting, and constraining, through which reality itself comes to be interpreted.

I shall refrain from providing specific examples, lest this reflection turn into something I do not intend it to be—namely, an indirect criticism aimed at particular individuals. That is not my purpose. Nevertheless, the reader may already be thinking of expressions such as performar ("to perform"), gratidão ("gratitude")—or even gratiluz ("gratitude and light")—empoderar ("to empower"), deste lugar ("from this place"), potência ("potential" or "power"), é sobre isso ("that's what it's all about"), e tá tudo bem ("and that's okay"), or the increasingly common habit of attaching the reflexive suffix -se to create impoverished neologisms—carioque-se, for example—along with countless other expressions that, in my view, often reflect the severe linguistic impoverishment of younger generations. If these came to mind, the reader would not be mistaken.

Another phenomenon associated with the official language of today's intelligentsia is what I metaphorically call the formation of blinkers. Increasingly confined by agendas that dictate what may or may not be thought or said—under the assumption that heterodox ideas might somehow "strengthen the enemy"—we become progressively less intelligent precisely because we become progressively less (i) creative (or original), (ii) rigorous, (iii) clear, (iv) bold, (v) prudent, and (vi) profound.

The episode that took place at the Federal University of Maranhão, involving the transgender activist who sought to educate "with her anus," is, to me, another symptom of this same condition. I do not believe the incident came as much of a surprise to anyone who has been observing the trajectory of Brazil's academic and intellectual milieu. Had the episode not so dramatically exceeded the bounds of common sense, I suspect there would have been no shortage of people prepared to defend it while simultaneously discrediting dissenting opinions.

These restrictions and limitations are especially evident in the disciplines I know best: philosophy and psychology. The fashionable expressions that are repeated ad nauseam reveal, in my view, a profound laziness of thought and of linguistic expression—or perhaps, in some cases, simply the fear of being cancelled. In response, I often adopt a style of thinking and writing that may appear unusually unconventional precisely because I neither can nor wish to submit to what I regard as one of the defining maladies of our age—a disease that Plato had already anticipated, metaphorically, in his Allegory of the Cave.
