02 de Setembro de 2024 (segunda). A mulher barbada do centro espírita de Governador Valadares // September 2, 2024 (monday). The bearded woman at the spiritist center in Governador Valadares

This morning, I found myself remembering a woman who used to attend the Spiritist center where my father and I occasionally went in Governador Valadares, in the state of Minas Gerais, during 1997. My father and I usually sat on the right side of the meeting hall. This woman, whom I never spoke to or approached, always sat on the opposite side, to the left.

Although I vaguely remember that she was often there whenever I attended, only a single mental image of her has remained with me. She is seated, attentively listening to the day's lecture. There is a gentle smile in her eyes. She wears simple clothes, has dark skin, and resembles an Indigenous woman, yet she also has facial hair. I can no longer remember whether the hair covered more of her face or was confined to her chin. She always caught my attention, and the long skirt she wore contrasted strikingly with the masculine appearance created by the hair on her face.

In the mind of my sixteen-year-old self, I silently gave her a name: the bearded woman.

I would often wonder whether she belonged to a circus.
