São sem dúvida
muito prolíficas as doutrinas psicológicas de todos aqueles – budistas,
hinduístas, jainistas, taoístas, estoicos e cristãos – que, com maior ou menor
intensidade, associam a felicidade ao desapego. É de fato um sinal de grande sabedoria
prática buscar refúgio no que permanece, no que traz consigo a infinitude. Obviamente,
os bens materiais e imateriais não se incluem entre as dimensões nas quais
devemos buscar refúgio; tampouco nas relações humanas.

The psychological doctrines advanced by those who, to
varying degrees—Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, Taoists, Stoics, and
Christians—associate happiness with detachment are undoubtedly rich and
profoundly fruitful. Indeed, it is a mark of great practical wisdom to seek
refuge in that which endures, in that which bears within itself the character
of infinity. Material and immaterial possessions, however, are obviously not
among the realities in which we should seek such refuge; nor, for that matter,
are human relationships.
